THE SECRET!!!!!

After a writer’s meeting the other day, my friend told me about this documentary that I “just HAD to see.” I asked her what it was about and she said it was called “The Secret” and it was about this practice that famous and successful people have known about for years. She told me that she couldn’t explain it that I would just have to see it. She lent the DVD to me and the next day Kyle and I watched it.
It was interesting to say the least. We agreed with some parts (like the importance of having a positive outlook on life), but ultimately it didn’t sit well with us.

In short, I found it disgustingly materialistic and possibly damaging. The Secret claims that our thoughts are responsible for what we endure in life. Well, I hardly believe that Jewish people brought the holocaust upon themselves by thinking negatively.

Anyways, that’s just one of many qualms I had and to spare you any more of my ranting, I’ll let you check it out for yourselves and form your own opinions. In the meantime, please view these clips showing the opinions of others that, in some way or another, pretty much reflect my own.

I was going to post about this video in my own journal a couple months ago but I had not gotten around to doing it. I formed the opposite opinion about it. There were definitely things I had to ignore but overall I agreed with how invaluable the lesson is. What about the older guy who recovered from paralysis and the “vegetable” sentence who ended up being able to walk and talk again? I don’t think that we can work miracles with our thoughts but I think they make a huge difference…and ultimately I think that’s the point of the video. I think that they want to reach a big audience so they have people from all kinds of backgrounds speaking on the same topic – which means that not all of the interpretations will be agreeable. I think that the overall point is true though.
The Bible teaches the same concept. Read that book I recommended… Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen (this is the one that’s on the christian best seller list…he’s a pastor). Some other books to look at: The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz (also a Christian author). The Ant and The Elephant by Vince Poscente (this one is more like a story with a moral…it’s funny and cute). There are a lot of others books that talk about the same concept.
I think you should take good things from the movie and leave the rest behind. It’s like going to the grocery store – you can buy the good stuff or the bad crap.
I’ll have to watch those videos you linked. I’m off to the doctor
